A Review of New Moon Magic: 13 Anti-Capitalist Tools for Resistance and Re-Enchantment by Risa Dickens and Amy Torok

I borrowed this book from the library, and liked it so much that I had to purchase it myself so that I could highlight the things I wanted and reread each chapter with each New Moon that comes my way. I found myself burrowing deep into the idea of re-enchanting my life, using the stories and lessons within this book to reignite my passion for a magical existance untethered from weight of Capitalism. It might not be near the New Moon in Cancer, but I find myself dancing freely and without abandon far more often, and full of so much more joy because of it. I think of my knives and needles and crochet hooks and see creating and cooking and repairing as form of resistence. I teach the families at our centre the power of making seed bombs from native wildflower seeds, and emphasizing that our city has no laws on the spreading of flower seeds on public land, and letting them know what's considered invasive here.

This book made me feel empowered when Capitalism made me feel powerless. The stories that accompany each New Moon are enriching and inspiring, bringing new light to disenfranchised voices. I cannot wait to go through a chapter a month, highlighting and annotating as the years go by. I think this book has staying power on any witch's bookshelf, and worth a read if you aren't a witch.

I give this book a 5 out of 5. I'll be thinking about it and using it for years to come.
